Wifebeaters - The Ultimate in Sleeveless Shirts

You've seen the sleeveless, ribbed undershirts that men sometimes wear.
Well now they have a whole slew of them for women., apparently!
It's just a plain simple little shirt, that covers the basic body parts that need to be covered.
Well one of the riders, and or driver, whichever week,
(D)
told me that these innocent little white, ribbed, sleeveless shirts were called
WIFEBEATERS
How do they get wife beater out of that?
Is it because when you see a guy wearing this type of shirt,
he just looks like he could beat the snot out of anyone in his path, even his wife.
But I've seen guys wearing white dress shirts that look the same way.
But you don't see those shirts getting a bad name.
Anyway, what brings me to this post is the fact that while on FB,
I happened to read a comment from (D)'s daughter (J).
J was apparently at a party and spilled red wine on her wifebeater shirt.
I made the comment on FB, that she (J) daughter of (D) was just a chip off the old block.
The funny thing to me was that the other rider, and or driver (J)
depending upon whose turn it is to drive,
daughter (N) agreed with me on FB.
Now my question is, if a man is wearing this shirt, the shirt is called a wifebeater,
then am I to assume that if a women is wearing this type of shirt,
is it then called a husbandbeater? manbasher? husbandsmasher?
Whats up with that?
Just a innocent little, white, sleeveless, ribbed shirt.
How did it ever get such a bad name?
